About Us

With over 20 years experience in the renewables sector Andy King opened the doors to a new and innovative Renewable Technology showroom back in 2008.

Low Carbon Energy Centre specialises in the design, supply and installation of renewable technologies including Solar PV, Solar Thermal, Heat Pumps (Ground and Air source), Wood-burning & Multi-fuel Stoves, Heat Recovery, Biomass.

With exacting standards and exceptional customer service Low Carbon Energy Centre soon established itself as a reputable business and with this success the company has expanded rapidly resulting in the founding of two new specialist divisions - fire BY DESIGN and energy BY DESIGN.  

Whether you’re intent on saving the planet, cutting your fuel bills or simply just want to stare endlessly into the flames of a crackling log fire we are here to help!

Our friendly team at fire BY DESIGN offer a professional design, supply and installation service with installations completed by our own experienced HETAS engineers.

Being HETAS registered demonstrates that we are competent and can provide tangible benefits and peace of mind. We will issue a certificate at the end of each installation to reassure you that the work has been carried out to the relevant standards.

Working alongside our engineers are a team of highly qualified tradesmen including Bricklayers, Plasterers and Carpenters so you can be assured that any associated works relating to your installation are carried out to exacting standards.   

Opening its doors back in June 2008, fire BY DESIGN has expanded rapidly and we are now proud to say that we offer the most extensive range of stoves brands on the South Coast!

At our unique showroom in Wimborne we have over 60 display models including Wood / Multi-fuel Stoves along with Gas and Electric Fires. We also host an extensive selection of hearths and surrounds along with fire irons and log baskets to help inspire you to create that perfect fireplace setting.

In 2015 the doors opened to our brand new state of the art renewable energy showroom, giving you the opportunity to get up close and personal with our very own combined heating system including live displays of a Mitsubishi Heat pump, Klover Smart 120 wood pellet cooker boiler, Joule solar thermal panel and Shinetime solar photovoltaic panels. 

Whether you are interested in just one technology or a combination of systems, our energy BY DESIGN team are on hand to tailor make the perfect system for your home. With our unbiased approach we are able to incorporate several energy technologies into a single heating system and by combining the latest innovations in wood burning stoves, solar thermal panels and heat pumps, with traditional boilers you can benefit from the lowest carbon energy option at all times, whilst still maintaining the levels of convenience often required in today’s busy lifestyles.

We are accredited with the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS)  which means that our Solar PV installations are eligible for the Feed in Tarriffs and Renewable heat incentives (RHI) for heat pumps, biomass and solar thermal. The incentives for going green have never looked so attractive.

Andy King – The Big Boss

A bit about Andy……..

Andy is the founder and brains behind the whole operation. Starting out over 30 years ago with little more than a wheelbarrow and a cement mixer he soon established himself as a successful building contractor with a reputation for exacting standards and quality customer service. Back in 1994 Andy installed his first ground source heat pump and subsequently became involved with his building clients installing solar thermal, air source heat pumps and under floor heating. Demand for these technologies increased overtime resulting in the creation of Low Carbon Energy Centre to run alongside the sister company, A & A King.    

What he enjoys about work…..

Still the first to arrive at work and last to leave Andy really thrives on the challenge that every day presents. He loves the varied nature of his work and is never happier than when he’s dreaming up bespoke renewable heating systems. Back in 2004 he set out plans for his 10 year exit strategy from the business……. Today we are a number of years on and he definitely isn’t planning retirement any time soon.

Richard King – Little Boss to Big Boss

A bit about Rich……..

With a degree in Environmental studies Rich has always had a passion for all things ‘green’. Keen to follow in the footsteps of his father he has worked his way up through the ranks and now plays an important role in the management structure.

What he enjoys about work…….

With an eye for detail he really enjoys the design aspect of his job and is never happier than when he is given licence to exercise his creative mind. There is nothing more satisfying for Rich than a job well done and a happy client.

Chris Roper – Renewable Manager

A bit about Chris……..

Chris has worked extremely hard to fast track his way to where he is today. He seems to absorb information like a sponge and has the ability to apply this information logically to any given situation. Among his many qualities, Chris is renowned for his determination – ‘no’ and ‘impossible’ are two words not found in his vocabulary.    

What he enjoys about work……

Although more of a pen pusher these days Chris loves nothing more than being on site and getting his hands dirty, you will often see him with his head up a chimney or clambering about on a roof. Secretly, a geek at heart he also revels in the science behind his work and is never more at home than when he is explaining how the various technologies work.

A bit about Sarah…….

Jack of all trades and master of none, Sarah would admit that her role in the office is somewhat varied to say the least. Needless to say she is a crucial link in the chain and without her office life would be a far more disorganised. 

What she enjoys about work…….

Sarah enjoys the everyday banter that office life brings. Always smiling, always happy, nothing is ever an issue.

A bit about Nikki……..

Sitting front of house, more often than not she will be your first port of call with Low Carbon Energy Centre. With her welcoming smile and enthusiastic manner you can be assured of a friendly service when you visit our showroom.

What she enjoys about work…….

Nikki loves arriving early to work to light the fires. However, the part of her job she enjoys the most is interacting with customers, she is a real people person. With her confidence and knowledge, we often lose her for hours chatting away to clients in the showroom - you’ll be hard pushed to catch her out on any technical info, particularly when it comes to wood-burners!

A bit about Zara……

Zara plays a key role in the smooth running of the business and her job description stretches a lot further than just Accounts Manager.

She can often be spotted with her head buried under a mountain of paperwork and to the untrained eye it may appear that her method of working is somewhat unorthodox. But for those who work with her closely will tell you that she is the queen of multitasking and her organisational skills are unquestionable.

A bit about Pete………

Pete is a long standing member of our team. He joined us straight from school as an apprentice carpenter and over the years has developed into a very accomplished and versatile tradesperson. Polite, punctual, clean and tidy, Pete is a pleasure to have working in your home.

What he enjoys about work…….

For Pete, variety is the spice of life, from fitting PV panels one day to installing a wood burner the next.

A bit about Robin……..

Very rarely do you catch Robin without a smile on his face. He is a kind and thoughtful man who always puts others before himself. He also happens to be a highly skilled individual who can turn his hand to just about any trade. From day to day his tasks are varied and rarely straight forward but his inventive mind always manages to find a solution.

What he enjoys about work…….

Have I mentioned that Robin is always happy.  He never moans or grumbles even when presented with the most awkward of tasks. Robin enjoys all aspects of his job but the element he particularly relishes is meeting new people – Robin just loves to talk!

A bit about Craig……..

Fed up with the long commutes and time away from his family that his previous job demanded Craig joined us back in 2013 and has never looked back. He enjoys a challenge and learning new things and with a methodical approach to his work always turns in a 1^st class job. 

What he enjoys about work……

From fitting solar panels one day to installing a twin wall flue system the next Craig loves the everyday variety that his job entails. Craig is a real people person and loves to talk – boy does he love to talk! It’s a good job that he can multitask otherwise you’d never get your stove fitted in time for Christmas.

A bit about James……..

James woke up one morning and decided that a career in banking wasn’t for him. An attractive pension scheme, free gym membership and a climate controlled office just didn’t tick all of the boxes. It wasn’t long before James established himself as the comedian of the company. With his random chicken impressions and tireless jokes there is certainly never a dull moment at work when he is around.   

What he enjoys about work……

Some may consider James to be over qualified for the position but as far as he is concerned he just loves being on site getting his hands dirty.
