Case Studies

In 2015 we were approached by Julia to design and install a new heating system for the renovation project she was undertaking. energybydesign.co.uk energy solutions dorsetAfter our first meeting it was clear that along with a level of ease and convenience a major requirement was for an environmentally friendly solution.

The building itself was quite large and after carrying out room by room heat loss calculations, it was clear that a single heat pump would not be able to cope with demand on its own. Therefore it was decided that we would use a hybrid solution utilising a 14kW Mitsubishi air source heat pump and a new condensing Viessmann gas boiler. The air source heat pump would be the primary form of heat until the ambient air temperature dropped below -2C when the gas boiler would take over.

Wimborne Energy - energybydesign.co.ukFor our heat emitters we kept the existing ground floor rooms on the original radiator circuit with some of the radiators upgraded. The new extension on the ground floor had a standard under floor system installed with a dry screed laid over and was separated in to two zones. On the first floor the master bedroom, walk through dressing area and en-suite again were split into 2 zones and were constructed from an 18mm cement board overlay system. The remaining bedrooms had a new radiator system installed on a separate time and temperature control to the ground floor with the towel rails for the bathrooms also having their own separate time and temperature control. Including hot water there is 7 separate zones within the property!

Julia was very keen on solar (both photovoltaic and thermal) and also rain water harvesting. We talked through the available roof spaces and levels of shading and decided that solar thermal on this occasion would not be suitable for the overall design. However due to the hipped shape of the roof construction, a solar PV array that was triangular shaped would be aesthetically pleasing. Energy Specialists Wimborne Dorset energybydesign.co.ukWe therefore chose the Trienergia range of panels using a mixture of both square and triangular shapes to create the overall effect we were looking for. A 5,000ltr shallow dig rain water tank was installed into the back garden with all the rain water from the down pipes being rerouted though the tank. All the toilets within the property, washing machine outlet and 4 outside watering points were installed for the rain water system. There is a submersible pump within the tank giving a pressurised supply to each outlet with a manual override in case of drought or pump failure.

Additionally we also installed a Charnwood Cove 2 multi-fuel stove into a custom built fire place complete with log stores, ornament recesses and a TV recess. There is a pure drinking water filter to all mains cold water outlets within the property and 3 new bathrooms were also fitted.

We would like to say a personal thank you to Julia for tasking energy BY DESIGN with the project, it was such a pleasure to be involved with a large scale transformation of a local property.
